I was delighted to see that Our Lady Help of Christians School in Murtoa was making their Eco-Cubby out of tyres.
Old car tyres create a huge amount of waste on the planet and there have been some interesting building techniques developed to utilise this resource. Tyres actually make a pretty solid structure when packed with earth and used as large bricks in a construction.
American architect, Mike Reynolds has developed a building design called an Earthship. Earthships use old car tyres and recycled materials to create buildings - a house out of garbage! The most fantastic thing about the Earthship design is that it is a completely sustainable building. It uses materials that would normally contribute to landfill, generates its own electricity, harvests its own rainwater and treats its own sewerage.
This is an inspiring concept. Have a look at this video and see for yourself.
How about creating an Eco-Cubby Earthship - or should that be an Earth-Cubby Eco-Ship...?
Architect Mike Reynolds will be giving a talk on his various design projects at the State of Design Festival in Melbourne on the 23rd of July. This would be an excellent PD opportunity for teachers.
