On the 11th May, I visited the year 5 students at Bundalaguah. I walked into a classroom exploding with activity, cardboard boxes and modeling materials were spread across the room and the students were busy, busy, busy!
The students have done a huge amount of work in class with both their teacher Mrs Richards and with their Architects, John Pye and Kirsty Fletcher who are doing a fantastic job planning and delivering a dynamic program for the students. The class has been doing a lot of group work in the form of focused workshops and activities. They have investigated their site in depth and have done a lot of work in class to understand measuring and scale.
Activities have emphasized the importance of understanding scale and space and the students created measured drawings and models of playground equipment. (Using the playground equipment to begin with has allowed students to interact with familiar structures in a different way). In order to develop designs that are realistic, each student created a 1:20 scale model of themselves out of plasticine, which has helped to develop their designs in proportion to the human body. They also created a 1:20 site model to help visualise where on site the cubby would be situated as well as to help understand orientation.
One of Bundalaguagh’s initial brainstorming sessions about the project came up with the following:
Our Eco-Cubby will:
- be fun
- have bits we can help build
- be decorated
- be able to be changed
- not be a house
- have more than one way in and out
- have a trap door or secret door or both
- have more than one room
- have a tunnel
- have spaces of different sizes
- have a space for playing games and have other spaces to sit
- have a roof you can play on or in
- have a ladder or a slide
- have a hole in the roof
- be cool in summer and warm in winter
- have a vegie patch
- collect water for the vegie patch
The groups designed their cubbies based on this list and have come up with some fantastic results. They have now decided on one design and are working to develop and improve its features. The next step is to work closely with Jon and Kirsty to create final drawings and their 1:5 model.
Congratulations Year 5, you are doing a fantastic job!
